El Cajon Stakes

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                         FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 2013

DAVID FLORES (Holy Lute, winner) – “I’ve been on the road; in Singapore, England and France. But it is always nice to come back home, especially when you can ride a horse like this. He’s got really good acceleration; a nice kick. When I asked him today, he went. Victor’s horse (jockey Victor Espinoza on R S Watson, who was involved in a stewards’ enquiry with the first- and second-place finishers) was starting to back up. That’s why I sent my horse through there. There was a hole and we went and took it. I wouldn’t have gone otherwise. I didn’t think there would be any problem, and there wasn’t.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Fury Kapcori, second) – “Victor’s horse (R S Watson) pushed me out. He cost me. He was going the other way.”

COREY NAKATANI (Tiz a Minister, third) – “I told Paul (trainer Paul Aguirre) that the stretch here is just too short for him. This horse has a long fuse and he makes a big late run and he needs room to do it.”

EDWIN MALDONADO (Tree of Life, fourth) – “I had a good trip; followed the winner around there. Victor’s horse was backing up.”

JIM CASSIDY (Holy Lute, winner) – “I’ve loved this horse since he was a yearling. I bought him at the sale in Kentucky because I loved the look of him. How can you not love a Midnight Lute [the sire]? The horse was RNA’d [not sold during the session because he didn’t bring the minimum set on him], so I went to the owners and asked them if he was still for sale for $120,000, and when they said he was I said ‘sold.’ I’m really proud of him. He’s still trying to figure things out. He got hurt as a 2-year-old so I didn’t race him last year. He ran against some seasoned horses today but I knew he’d run well. That’s why I brought him back a little fast. He came out of his maiden win as if he hadn’t run.”
