El Cajon Stakes

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                                                                     SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2009

EL CAJON STAKES

$100,000, 3-Y-O, 1 M

GARRETT GOMEZ (Grazen) – “The plan was to let him roll away from there for the first 100 yards, then take a look and see where we were at. I took up a good spot off the leader and let him go on about it. This race may be a key one for him. Last sixteenth of a mile he started acting like a professional. Inside the eighth pole he was looking around and changing leads on me and wasn’t sure if he was really into it or not. But when that other horse (Chocolate Candy) came to him late, he dug in and got serious. He’s a little horse, but he can be a tough little horse.”

JOEL ROSARIO (Chocolate Candy) – “I think this was a good race for him. I think his people will be happy. It was his first time back (first start in three months) and his first time on the main track at Del Mar. The winner had run sooner and was eligible to be more racing fit. Today was his day.”

ALEX SOLIS (Fu Peg He Rat) – “A good race for him. He tried his best.”

MIKE MITCHELL (Grazen) -- “I thought he could rate, but I wasn’t thrilled to see him between horse battling with the speed horses. But that’s the beauty of having a Garrett Gomez. I don’t ever give him any instructions. We’ll be going to the Cal Cup Classic and then give him some time off. We’ll see what kind of a 4-year-old we’ll have.”
