Eddie Read Stakes

DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA                                      SATURDAY, JULY 20, 2013

Eddie Read Stakes

(Grade I)

RAFAEL BEJARANO (Jeranimo, winner) – “I could tell they were going kind of fast up there and I knew that would be good. My horse likes to make that last run and he’s really got a good kick. You can do what you want with him. He’s so classy. I have a lot of confidence when I ride him.”

VICTOR ESPINOZA (Vagabond Shoes, second) – “I had a perfect trip. He put in a good close for me; an unbelievable close actually. And he’ll run better next time, too.”

EDWIN MALDONADO (Fly Lexis Fly, third) – “He handled the turf great and I had a beautiful trip. I couldn’t ask for more from him.”

MARTIN GARCIA (Fed Biz, fourth) – “I can’t believe I’m on the lead and the horse outside me (Slim Shadey) has his rider sending. It ruined it for my horse.”

GARY STEVENS (Slim Shadey, eighth) – “I was told to make the lead. I did all I could to do so.”

MIKE PENDER (Jeranimo, winner) -- “It seems almost surreal to say the horse redeemed himself when he had nothing to prove. They’re going to say this was a weak rendition of the Eddie Read, but all he has done is run second to Accclamation (in 2011) and take down the winning honors today. I think when Jeranimo is in a real horserace, where there’s speed, tactical speed and deep closers like himself, that’s when he’s able to shine. And today he had perfect conditions.”

SPLITS:  :23.22  :46.23  1:09.79  1:34.07  1:45.80

This was the second Eddie Read victory for Bejarano and his second stakes win of the meet. He now has 34 Del Mar stakes wins.

This was the first stakes victory at Del Mar for Pender.

Jeranimo is owned by B.J. Wright of Pasadena, CA and Robert LaPenta of Westport, CT.

Jeranimo, in winning the 10th race of his career in his 35th start, earned a check for $180,000, pushing his bankroll to $1,400,864. The 7-year-old horse is seven for 21 on the turf and this is his 20th straight run in a Graded stakes.
