DEL MAR OAKS
$350,000, Grade I, 3-y-o f, 9 F (T)
GARRETT GOMEZ – “We didn’t push on her too hard the other day (San Clemente August 1). She was coming off that layoff (seven months) and we let her ease back into it. I was hoping she would jump out of there today and put me in the right spot. I wanted her to help me and she did. I could tell the way the race was unfolding that it was just right. I had to come out with her maybe a little earlier than I wanted to, but it worked out OK. I got a jump and she did the rest. She’s a nice filly.”
VICTOR ESPINOZA (Nan) – “I had a good trip and she ran a good race. I had no choice but to go down inside and I wished I could have gone wide. She just goes better out there. She gets a little intimidated down inside and I could sense some of that today. But she ran good.”
JOEL ROSARIO (Well Monied) – “Going from the five-eighths (pole) to the half (mile pole), I could tell they were going too slow. I felt I had to go up there and get my filly in the race. She did get up there and she kept on going. She ran well. The pair in front of me didn’t stop. They ran fast to the finish.”
BRICE BLANC (Starlarks) – “She was a little rank early; a little aggressive. But I got a good run and she gave it a good try. She fired. It just wasn’t enough today.”
ALEX SOLIS (Lexlenos) – “No pace. No choice (but to go wide).”
MARTIN GARCIA (Strawberry Tart) – “She was running so good, but then when it was time to go and I asked her she was done. She was just empty.”
BOB BAFFERT (Internallyflawless) -- “Chuck Fipke [owner] has been very patient with this filly. He let me bring her along the way I thought she should be trained, and she rewarded us with a Grade I win. The program is to win a Grade I and we did it here. This filly has always had a lot of talent. Garrett [jockey Garrett Gomez] was the difference today. He gave her a perfect ride. He had her in good position all the way and when the rest of the field started to panic at the three-eighths pole he stayed with the plan and then got the jump on the rest of them. Mr. Fipke sent her to me last year to run on the synthetic, but she turned out to be a great turf horse.”
NOTE: Baffert said he would point her toward the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Friday, November 6.
CRAIG DOLLASE (Nan) -- “We are really pleased with the effort. Now she’s Grade I placed. She’s been running against the best all year. She got the right trip and finished full of run.”
