Del Mar Handicap (Grade II)
DEL MAR, CALIFORNIA SATURDAY, AUGUST 24, 2013
VICTOR ESPINOZA (Vagabond Shoes, winner) – “He’s such a nice horse; so easy to ride. I knew I was on the best horse today; I just had to stay out of trouble. When you ride a horse like this, you have a lot of confidence. I asked him and he went. He’s that kind of horse. John (trainer John Sadler) just has done a wonderful job getting him ready for this race. He’s a pleasure.”
GARRETT GOMEZ (Lucayan, second) – “He’s a typical European and Neil (trainer Neil Drysdale) wanted him covered up (behind horses). I rode him that way. He quickened nicely, but Victor (Espinoza on Vagabond Shoes) rode a nice, patient race. We were going so slow, I thought I might get him (Espinoza) to commit too soon on his horse, but he didn’t.”
COREY NAKATANI (Huntsville, third) – “He ran a huge race. He did everything right. He did it all, but win.”
JOHN SADLER (Vagabond Shoes, winner) -- “We bought him out of the ‘Arc sale last year. It’s a very good racing age sale the day before the Arc de Triomphe. (Bloodstock agent) Hubert Guy called and I green-lighted him. The way he ran the other day in the mile and an eighth (Eddie Read) and finished very well I thought he was ready to do it. As the season has gone on he has acclimated (to the U.S.) We’ll definitely look at the Breeders’ Cup.“
(The Del Mar Handicap is a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, Saturday, November 2 at Santa Anita.)
