Caught a bit of National Geographic Channel's Maya Apocalypsathon last night. Seems there's a Mayan tablet that mentions the date and that some event will happen. The rest is illegible. That's all the Apocalypse freaks apparently require.

Also saw that they are running an entire series about "Doomsday Preppers." Somehow that was never how I thought of National Geographic.

Reality is there IS an unusual alignment of the sun, Earth and a planet or two with the Galactic center of our Milky Way galaxy on that date. But any calendar has to end sometime. The real wonder is the Mayans et al had all this astronomical knowledge and used it.
