The main reason for a businesses success is that they offer a product or service that the customer wants at a price the customer is willing to pay which results in a suitable profit for the owners of the company. Labor can be a big or little factor depending on the product or service.

Hostess has encountered problems for a variety of reasons with a major one being the price of sugar which skyrocketed thanks to the US government placing tariffs on imported sugar.

My brother, who's a bit of a foodie and works in Saudi Arabia, wrote:

It's been years since I've eaten a Hostess product, but the news kind of freaked me out. I went out and bought some Cupcakes, Twinkies and DingDongs (which, along with Ho-Ho's and several other things became popular after our childhood). I haven't thought that Twinkies were very interesting for about 60 years, though smothered in macerated strawberries and whipped cream, they're serviceable. I discovered that the cupcakes are delicious when dunked (I've tried tea, coffee and milk and all work). They tend to fall apart, but they float and they're just as good scooped out of the liquid with a spoon.

Still demand out there for nutrition-free breads and snacks. ;-)

NEW YORK (AP) — Wonder bread could start appearing in school lunchboxes again soon....

...Hostess has also picked opening bidders, known as a "stalking horse," for its snack cakes. A joint offer from two investment firms — Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management LLC — was picked as the lead bid for Twinkies and other snack cakes. Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn has said he expects that auction to be "wild and wooly."...
