absolutely crazy how much these mares are bringing. for the most part these top mares who were really good race horses never ever produce anything even close to what they were on the race track. the best producing mares generally werent good runners and in many cases never even ran themselves. when these mares ran thier guts out as race horses, many times that makes those foals subpar.
It's strange to expect something to produce itself or better. Really, there are numerous mares out there that ran their guts out that produced equal or better to themselves. I suppose I could make a list, but I'm not going to. At the same time, there are numerous that have produced goats. Then, at the same time, complete goats have produced champions, and complete goats have produced goats.
Horses with sensational pedigrees sometimes turn out to be sensational racehorses. Sometimes horses with sensational pedigrees can't even outrun their groom.
If you've got $10 million to spend, why not go buy a "collectors item" such as HOY Havre de Grace, who also has a pretty darn good pedigree.
Isn't it fun, this game of chance?
you could buy nice mares in the $50k to $100k range and have just as good/better chance to produce a champ as any of these million dollar+ mares. and its the exception when one of these great race mares produce top quality. it takes something out of them when they run so hard. of course there are exceptions, but for the most part if you buy a well bred mare with good conformation who never raced she will have better foals than zenyatta or rachel alexandra
I too am shocked at the prices at this sale. You should have seen the nicely bred mares *in foal to nice stallions* NOT GETTING A BID at the 10/9 Saratoga sale! And these people are dropping hundreds of thousands in Keeneland for no guarantee. Must be nice to have money to burn.

I have to agree with CK here. These prices are outrageous. To spend that kind of money on a broodmare is pretty crazy, but to spend it on one that hasn't produced anything is insane.
If you have $10 million to spend how about buying a whole band of mares and increasing your chances of breeding something good.
I couldn't agree more.
Plus, having just one or two mares, you have to wait year after year to see what you get. By purchasing several mares, you will have several babies (healthy hopefully) to run.
Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

200 mares @ 50,000 cost does 1 mare at 10,000,000. Thats 200 stud fees, 200 times more expenses. I agree 10,000,00 is risky and probably will never be profitable. But if you breed her to Bernardini and the foal looks the part you can sell the baby for 1,000,000 maybe far more. You could do it 3 times before anyone knows if she can produce a runner or not. That gets you part of your 10,000,000 back. The fillies will always have some value on pedigree, so you do have a chance to make money, if an early one can really run you could pull it off.
With 200 mares your chance of making money is ZERO.
if that $10 million dollar mare produces 3 foals who sell for $1 million each its going to cost at least a million in expenses
so you now have $2 million back out of your $10 million.
perfect example proud spells 1st foal ran today up the track.
if you bought 10 mares for $100k each you would have an excellent chance of coming up with much better stock than anything this $10 million dollar mare will ever produce, and you still have $9 million dollars left over.
First of all, no one even knows if she can get in foal or carry one to term. If she can't they just flushed their money down the toilet. They are spending this kind of money for a broodmare who has never been bred. That's a huge gamble.
And how about buying 20 mares at $50,000 and use the rest of the $10 million to pay for all the expenses? Believe me, with 20 foals on the ground you have a better chance of making money that with just one.
