We all seen owners look at a horse as a piece of meat or a hay burner. The owner wants to get rid of the animal and has no where to put it.
So what do they do, they run it until it breaks down or sell them to killers.
Now the big question.
Should the horse have the right to go to a retirement farm instead being van off to the slaughter house or be ran into the ground and break down at some fair.
I say yes, they have the right to retire without being killed.
It always amazes me to listen to you. Everything is black and white. Everything is absolute. Thousands of TB racehorses retire sound every year and go on to second careers. They are not all run until they break down. There are many, many re-training and re-homing organizations that are supported by the industry. Whether you like it or not, these horses are property. Some people will run them irregardless of whether or not they could be retired at no cost to them (which they can at any time). Do OTTB's end up at slaughter? Yes. But so do hundreds of backyard pleasure horses and cute little kid's ponies. The majority of horses that end up at slaughter are sent there from farms and boarding stables. It has been years since horses at the big three tracks in CA were sent to slaughter directly from the racetrack. You will hear horror stories from some of the more fanatical factions about the "slaughter truck" that makes regularly scheduled visits to the backside. Well, I can tell you that as far as HP, SA, and DM are concerned, there is no such thing and hasn't been for the 15 years I have been here. That is a lie used by some of the more unscrupulous "charities" to increase donations and stir up the masses Is there a need for monetary help to give retired racehorses a better chance at finding a good home after racing? There sure is!! If you want to help out send me a private message and I can give you a list of honest, legitimate organizations that would love to take your tax deductible donation. The owners and trainers of this industry already support the retirement of racehorses via the purses and donations. Bettors, well, it isn't your responsibility is it? The tracks should do more but hey never will and crying about it won't change that.

what about computer racing i think the young kids might get hooked on that type of gaming, there is no 20-35 year olds at racetracks, take a look around, i think i might enjoy computer generated racing a lot better, more honest, no animal abuse, heck i would buy a stable for a 1000.00 , yeah that would be fun

Yes, I don't like politicians, they stay to much in the gray area,
All I am saying is this, if I own a horse and he is unfit to run, I have the opportunity to take him to a farm and drop the amimal off. Then the farm will take care of him for the rest of his life with proper care.
A curtain percentage of the takeout should go to these farms.

Silly me. I believe that if you buy a horse you should be responsible for it's care while racing and after racing. Owners that don't should be banned from future ownership.

Can you imagine what a terrible world it would be if everyone took responsibility for their actions, purchases, etc? Vince P

It would shatter the space-time continuum and implode the Universe.
America must have the highest "goofs per capita" rating of any nation outside Antarctica.

If you want to take money from the current takeout to pay for support of these farms, that is one thing. If you want to increase the current takeout to pay for the care of the horse at these farms, then find someone else to wager on the game, because I am done. Take it from the Tracks share, take it from the horsemans purse share, take it from the advertising budget share of the takeout, just stop increasing the takeout and asking me to pay more. The horse racing market for gamblers isnt there as it used to be, the last thing they need is for gamblers to have another excuse to look elsewhere. Next time you go to a track look inside the program at all the hard names listed as executives, officials, etc. Do we need all of them? What the heck do they do with nobody showing up at the tracks? Cut their salaries by 5% and use that money.
