31st place good for 5 large. This was done on the back of a 12-1 shot.

Tied for 31st is correct, but he actually won $4,950. Just below the $5,000 withholding threshhold..

I'm 99.77% positive that had he won OVER $5,000, withholdings wouldn't be taken out. At least that's how it was for me last year. Matter of fact, I believe this is treated like a prize winning where he has to declare it next year but nothing is taken out for now.

But since he's a student and makes less than $9,777 like me, he probably won't even have to file/pay taxes on this.
