NYRA to Consider Synthetic Surface, Other Changes at AQU

Postby Southieboy » Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:43 pm

NYRA Inc. Chair David Skorton and Anthony Bonomo, Chair of NYRA’s Equine Health and Safety Committee, announced today the immediate establishment of the position of Equine Veterinary Medical Director. The new director will establish the Mortality Review Board, as recommended in the New York Task Force on Racehorse Health and Safety report issued September 28, 2012, as well as make ongoing assessments to improve the health and safety of horses competing at NYRA racetracks.

The following additional changes to NYRA policies and operations will be considered by the NYRA Board at its meeting on January 25:

* Reduce the number of racing days in a week and limit the number of races on a given day during the season at Aqueduct.

* Bolster overall security measures related to pre-race security and racing integrity.

* Install a synthetic surface at Aqueduct for the 2013-14 Winter season.

* Curtail racing during the winter at Aqueduct.

What were the results of the necropsies on the 28 recent fatalities
on the inner surface? I think the track is blamed too often.

What about fatalities during the morning workouts.

When RGIII went down they blamed the surface at RFK stadium was blamed. not true.

Another rathole track they should close asap.I watched a 10K mdn claimer from there yesterday.Dominguez was on horse who was 0 for 17 and it was 3/5. He barely held on to 4th in a 6 horse field.I've seen better racing at a county fair in Kentucky.
