Upper Deck story in Sports Illustrated

My brother Chris is quoted in this article, towards the beginning. He has survived 5 layoffs at Upper Deck. It turns out that people can apparently live without baseball cards and sports memoribilia during a recession.

Very nice Kevin. How can one be sure to get a few packs of the Goodwin Champion set with equine hair?

Upper Deck dug its own grave by pricing baseball cards way out of the market with all their BS "special" sets, etc.

For a kid to buy a COMPLETE set of 2009 Upper Deck Cards, it would cost several hundred dollars. Whereas a COMPLETE 2009 set of Topps cards cost $59.95..

Invested heavily(for a kid of 5 to a young man of 25) in baseball cards. Haven't even looked into the box after box still in storage. Only know that I had about 20 Daryl Strawberry and the same amount of Ken Griffey rookie cards. ESPN.com did a great recent article showing how these values have tanked over the years. I think at their 5 year points of their respective careers, both cards were worth upwards of $100. Now I probably should just put them on my bicycle spokes(young people need to ask their elders).

Joel:

Too true....the very same thing that benefited UD when the economy was surging is what's killing them now. It is what it is.

By the way, if anyone would ever be interested in a tour of their facility in Carlsbad, I could probably arrange it. Just an FYI, hit me up with a PM if interested, and I will see what I can do. From what I understand, touring Upper Deck's offices is a lot of fun.

Oh, and they are working on some specialty cards w/Smarty Jones and Funny Cide, methinks.

The article mentions the Equine hair cards with SJ and FC hair included in the package.
