Debit card scammers !!!!

2 months ago I used my B of A debit/credit card at a gas station pump. No shady looking characters near me. The next morning my card # was used to withdraw 500.00 20 miles away at a B of A. After reporting this to the bank asap I was credited back the money . I spoke to a B of A investigator who said never use your card at a gas station kiosk or pump and to use it inside. Or even better use cash. This wasnt a matter of a fake device over the real one. I found out these con artists now have a device to put a card in right after you and pull out all your info. The absolute worst place is the standalone ATM. I had my info stolen and the account drained within hours, some of the usage was 2000 miles away, but the worst part was because the bank refunded the charges, technically there was no theft and the police refused to investigate. It was beyond absurd; I called the police with an EXACT location of an ATM that stole info, and they refused to take a report or investigate the machine owner. No wonder these types of things happen as often as they do.

Doesn't matter where you use your card - inside or out. It's an 'inside' job. The way it works is that compromised software is loaded on to the machine. Then a card can be entered which dumps all the logs. The problem is that while your PIN is encrypted when its sent for authorization, its sits unencrypted on the local machine and when the logs are dumped viola! Can easily be rectified by the banks\terminal owners, but they're lazy. Would prolly cost an additional $80 in rupees to have the Bangalore programmers fix it. The scary newz is this was first found on ATMs in the UK. So you can be compromised virtually anywhere.

My MO is to use only petrol centric cards at stations. Get an Exxon or Chevron or Valerio card and use that. Still open to compromise but narrows the potential usage.
