There is nobody close to Scully

Postby Dgstan » Fri Jul 10, 2009 9:11 pm

Great article regarding an interview between Larry King and Red Barber. The subject is Vin Scully.

King: Is he the best?
Barber: He is undoubtedly the best, no question.
King: Nobody in his league.
Barber: There is nobody close to Scully.

Agree, I have MLB.com and watch every Dodger game and often listen to "away" announcers when Vinny isn't doing the game. Some are pretty decent (Mets, Milwaukee) but when you grow up listening to Scully via your Kmart transistor radio in your ear every night, you get spoiled.

It's kinda like having dinner with Alyssa and then having to look at Janet Reno.

I still feel that the Lakers can win 400 more championships and there is still the huge void that is Chick Hearn. Joel Meyers is the biggest A-Hole in all of sports. He comes off like an absolute on TV.

I have no idea who Joel Meyers is, but the most unlistenable commentator in sports is Rex Hudler. He is the sole reason I am not a big Angel fan.

Too bad Vinny can't call those games East of the Rockies off a video feed. Who was that idiot with Lyons the other night ? It sounded like he had been taking lessons from Steve Physioc in clichés & hype

Vinny has one thing the new breed never will. Understatement & letting the moment speak for itself. 8-)

For those of you who really like Scully, I strongly urge you to subscribe to Dodger Magazine or pick up the July issue - I just got mine in the mail yesterday.

It's a keeper.

Amazon, via the lady I sleep with, also just sent me "Pull up a Chair" for my 30 birthday last week. That.s another saver.

Lived in Vegas in 82 & 83, Vin was only thing that made listening to those games tolerable. Fernando mania, a flash-back barf ! By the way, he called one of the all-timers in 49er history. 1981 playoff game against Cowboys. :o 8-) On final drive which culminated in "The Catch", he is relating Montanas amazing Cotton Bowl triumph of 3 years earlier, with the flu & 103 fever, but still threw 5 TD's in amazing second half comeback. A National Treasure. :!:

Grew up in L.A. obviously loving the Red-man. Trust me, after living in multiple cities thereafter, Vin Scully is miles ahead of any other broadcaster in any sport. Chick Hearn was the only one close. I know people in Boston or New York might feel differently, but friends I've had that have come from there to the west coast, end up agreeing about Vin.

Vin is great and as I said so was Chick Hearn. One of my favorite shots as a small kid watching the Lakers was the shot Magic made from half court. It was a regular season game . After the shot I always remember Chick saying if someone wants to go to commercial they can go over my dead body. Chick and Vin were like day and night in terms of styles that is why Vin got national exposure and Chick did not. Chick was always a bit folksy and corny with his style.

One of my favorite moments as a kid growing up.
