Raider Fans Can't Sell Out Stadium - Another Blackout

Postby Joel » Thu Sep 24, 2009 2:20 pm

Small stadium, young, exciting team, one "missed" call - from being 2-0. Wow..and I thought Raider fans were supposed to be among the best in the NFL..

Raiders fail to sell out game against Broncos in time to avoid local blackout

Games need to be sold out 72 hours before kickoff to avoid a blackout in a 75-mile radius. The Raiders got a one-day extension to sell out the opener against San Diego but were unable to avoid the blackout against the Broncos.

The Raiders have had two games blacked out each season since taking over ticket sales from Alameda County before the 2006 season. This marks the first division game blacked out during that time.

Geee, Oakland has a population of about 420,000 while San Diego has over 1.2 Million. San Diego County has over twice as many people as Alameda County as well.

If your going to play the population game, Green Bay is around 175,000 people and they sell out no matter what.

I think the NFL has a problem with the current blackout rule. Along with the Raiders home game, the Lions game (big surprise) will also be blacked out. The Chargers game just did get to a sell out in time.

In this economy, I think the NFL needs to look at this rule a little differently. I'm not saying they shouldn't do something to protect their live gates, but perhaps instead of 100% sell out 72 hours in advance, maybe a 90% capacity within 48 hours or something.

AG,

I agree with you about Green Bay. Let me state for the record, I am not a Green Bay fan, I live in Chicago-I hate Green Bay. However, I give them credit for a small population, they always sell out.
