Best makes his case with impressive outingBy Ted Miller
ESPN.com
Editor's note: Each week this season, ESPN.com will ask one of its Heisman Watch voters to explain his or her picks.
1. Tim Tebow, Florida: Tebow hasn't been spectacular, but he's the best player on the nation's No. 1 team, and his numbers are strong. He is the nation's seventh-rated passer, and has rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns. He has plenty of work ahead through which he can make statements -- positive or negative -- about whether he deserves another trophy.
2. Jahvid Best, Cal: Score five touchdowns in one game -- as Best did Saturday at Minnesota -- and folks will notice. Best's Heisman stock is clearly rising, but his legitimacy ultimately will be measured over the next two weekends. If Best puts up impressive numbers against Oregon and USC -- and Cal wins both games -- he will erase the term "dark horse" next to his candidacy.
3. Jacory Harris, Miami: Loving Miami right now. If the Hurricanes win Saturday at Virginia Tech and Oct. 3 against Oklahoma, they deserve at least a No. 2 ranking. And you could make a strong argument for No. 1. Why is entertaining that idea even reasonable? Harris. The nation's third-rated passer has been spectacular thus far.
4. Colt McCoy, Texas: Dropped McCoy from second to fourth on this week's ballot because his numbers so far aren't great -- six touchdowns, four interceptions. The haters will shout: Why is he even on the list? Because he's Colt McCoy. The Longhorns will shout: How could you drop him? Because he hasn't looked like the 2008 Colt McCoy just yet. Plenty of time to regain his Colt McCoy bona fides.
5. Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame: Yeah, I didn't like how he got all "Look at me!" when he committed to Notre Dame, either, but he's been nothing but lights-out this season, and he seems to have grown as a person and a leader. That should matter. If it doesn't to you, consider this: He is the nation's second-rated passer and has thrown for nine touchdowns with zero interceptions. One word: money.
Tracking the Candidates
1Tim TebowQB | FloridaNext Game: 9/26 at UKTim Tebow ran for 76 yards and a touchdown and went 14-of-19 for 115 yards with one interception in the Gators' win over Tennessee. His 1-yard rushing TD was the 46th of his career, which ties him with with Kevin Faulk on the SEC all-time rushing list. He didn't throw a touchdown, which ended his streak of 30 games with a passing TD. With today's win -- speaking of streaks -- Tebow and the Gators have won 13 straight, which is a school record.

2Jahvid BestRB | CaliforniaNext Game: 9/26 at OREBest got off to a blistering start at Minnesota with three first-half TDs, including a highlight-reel leap in the first quarter. Cal's offense stalled in the second half as the Gophers made a game of it, but Best turned it on late when the Bears needed him most with two fourth-quarter TDs as they collected a much-needed road win, 35-21.

3Colt McCoyQB | TexasNext Game: 9/26 vs. UTEPThe 2009 Colt McCoy hasn't been as impressive as the 2008 version. But the 2009 McCoy did something the 2008 McCoy couldn't -- beat Texas Tech. On Saturday, the Longhorns exorcised their demons from last year against the Red Raiders, although McCoy wasn't exactly spectacular in the 34-24 win, throwing two picks to go along with his 205 yards and one touchdown.

4Jacory HarrisQB | Miami (FL)Next Game: 9/26 at VTHarris has powered Miami's return to the top 10 by leading the Hurricanes to consecutive wins over ranked ACC opponents to start the season. Miami's national credentials -- as well as Harris' ability to stay in the Heisman race with his more distinguished QB counterparts -- will be tested in the coming weeks with a trip to Virginia Tech and a visit from Oklahoma.

5Case KeenumQB | HoustonNext Game: 9/26 vs. TTUThere's not much you can do to make a case for yourself during a bye week, so Houston's win over Oklahoma State in Week 2 had to carry Case Keenum through Week 3. The Cougars get back on the field Saturday when Texas Tech visits in what should be a heck of a battle between Keenum and Red Raiders QB Taylor Potts. The two are averaging almost 800 yards passing a game between them this season.
