Dodgers Get Thome and Garland for Stretch Run

Dodgers acquire Jim Thome, Jon Garland

The Los Angeles Dodgers loaded up for the stretch run Monday night, acquiring Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox and right-handed starter Jon Garland from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

L.A. gave up minor leaguer Justin Fuller for Thome and a player to be named for Garland. The White Sox also will help pay some of Thome's remaining salary this season.

The moves were announced during the Dodgers' game with the D-backs in L.A. Both players will be eligible for the postseason if the Dodgers get there. Teams had until midnight ET to set add players for October.

Thome is batting .249 with 23 home runs and 74 RBIs. He agreed to waive his no-trade rights. The 39-year-old slugger likely will be a left-handed power threat off the bench. He could play first base in a pinch, but the Dodgers already have James Loney as their everyday first baseman.

Garland would seem a much more significant pickup; he'll give the Dodgers needed help in their rotation. The 32-year-old was 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA in 27 starts for Arizona. More important, he works deep into games (he's on pace to throw more than 200 innings this year) and can help ease the burden on an overworked Dodgers bullpen.

Also Monday, the White Sox traded right-hander Jose Contreras to the Colorado Rockies for minor league pitcher Brandon Hynick. The move, as well as the Thome deal, was part of a late fire sale by the fading club.

See, I don't get baseball's trading DEADLINES. Wasn't the deadline a month ago, when everybody thought Halliday would be gone from the Jays? Sheesh, it just doesn't seem right that the rich(and sometimes)stupid teams get an out this close to the end of the season.
