...how have Sheikh Mohammed’s expensive yearlings made out as racehorses?

Between 1999 and 2006, the sheikh purchased 82 million-dollar-plus yearlings at U.S. sales for a total of $199,150,000. Through 2008, according to data provided by Bloodstock Research Information Services, these 82 yearlings had earned approximately $5,600,000 racing in the U.S, Europe and Dubai. That’s a return of 2.8 percent on their collective purchase price.

Providing further perspective is the astounding fact that as of the end of last year, Better Talk Now and Brass Hat - the gallant campaigners who ran second and third Saturday in the Sword Dancer Invitational - had earned more purse money than these 82 yearlings combined.

Only one of the 82 has won a Grade or Group I race (Dubai Destination). There have been four Grade/Group II winners, including E Dubai (Suburban Handicap) and Essence of Dubai (Super Derby).

When you have all the money in the world and loves the horses like he does, it doesn't matter to the Sheik whether he makes money or not. Anything he does that has to do with horses is for the pure pleasure of it. I'm sure his stallions offset (though probably not much) some of the loss.

How the heck and to whom would he right it off to???? I guess himself ultimately . . . . . . . ;)

I think its not so much about ROI as such, as it is the abysmal record of "good choices." I'll bet you could have spent the cash absolutely at random over the same period and done just as well--probably better. (Wish I had the chance!)
