Help...1st time going to Del Mar

Postby Teri111 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:45 pm

I have NEVER been to a race in person, always watch on tv or the computer. I finally get to go to Del Mar to see Tiago next Wednesday. I am so excited, but have no idea what I am doing. Can someone tell me what kind of admittance I need or where I should be to see Tiago and the races the best. Or any other kind of information I need. I really am a fish out of water, and I don't know anyone who knows anything(or really likes racing for that matter).

I think Wednesdays are "Free and Easy" but I can't find a link now that explains it--I think you get free seats and cheap beer, anyway! If you look in "General Info" and the track plan, you can see where general admission and clubhouse divide. On a Wednesday you will probably be able to get a perfectly good seat in the general admission/"Stretch Run" area although with clubhouse access you can watch the horses "walkover" from the barn to the saddling paddock--probably your best chance to get a close look at Tiago. (He was one of my five Derby win bets, incidentally--none of which was Street Sense!)

You can cross over into the infield for a change of scenery, which is nice for a turf race. The tunnel is at the far end (quarter pole) of the grandstand.

Free & Easy Wednesdays are for Diamond Club members -- if you wish to join, you can do so outside the admission gate before you enter. Photo ID is required. http://www.dmtc.com/season/events/index.php?id=88

If you want to go to Clubhouse side, there's a pass-through gate between the two sides where you can pay the difference between Clubhouse and Stretch Run admission.

If you can, try and get there early and scope the place out. You can also bet on Saratoga starting at 10am. There are several patios on the paddock side that are in the shade and allow for excellent viewing on the horses in the walking ring and it's free to sit there.

Thanks everyone for the help, it is much appreciated.

If I pay for clubhouse admission, can I go from clubhouse to stretch run and back again? I am sorry, I do not want to be a bother, but I have no idea about anything. I just want to be able to see the horses(mostly Tiago) so maybe I can take a couple of pictures, and see Tiago win his race.

I waited all last year to go to Del Mar to see my very favorite Gayego run, and he never did, so I really want to see Tiago, he is just a smidgen below Gayego on my list.

Thanks again, Teri

Yes, you can. They'll stamp your and when you enter and read the stamp with the light whenever you cross back to Clubhouse from Stretch Run.
