Longacres Mile

Postby PrivateSmiles » Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:27 am

If you didn't see this yesterday you should have. Winning jockey (back-to-back Mile wins, at that) Gailyn Mitchell was channeling Calvin Borel in his victory whoops, hollers, gestures & loving on his horse Assessment. Howard Belvoir had his 2nd Mile win in as many years. Good stuff.
"And Afleet Alex just ran right by Giacomo like he was standing still!"

And then he gave his jockey agent a BIG kiss!!

(Luckily, the agent was his wife.)

All around, very sweet.

Assessment's win in Longacres Mile cracked Simon Bray's pick 4 ticket.

That was a very good run for Assessment, especially coming out of the 12 hole in a mile race and facing the likes of Awesome Gem. The 12 horse has won only once before in the Longacres Mile and that was in 1935 at the very first running. Note that it was back-to-back Mile wins for the trainer, Howard Belvoir, not Gallyn Mitchell. Gallyn won the mile in 2000 as well as yesterday.

For anyone who has not already figured it out, Awesome Gem has the the biggest hanger I have ever seen that is not a claimer. They fell down in front of him and still refused to pass the last one.

How could Rusell Baze be so wide around the far turn. He could have won it if he was int he middle the whole way.
