This is the classic battle between entertainment and serious handicapping. Ever notice that most folks on TVG look good on camera? Roger is not a happy man. He also sees these guys on TVG and wishes he could look good enough to get TV time. Anyone that wears sweats in the winners circle or in the paddock to saddle his clients horses has not figured out how to make the real money (see TVG advertising money post). Charbroiled, if you and Stevieboy have a personal vendetta with him, why don't you both take it elsewhere. If you want to bash him for his opinions, well that's what we do here ;) . But then you bash his attire and appearance - Julio in his lovely shorts in the circle and Poster Boy Jon White and Large Sarge seem to do OK on TV. So try to make a point intelligently OK?

I consider Rog a friend and I'm not going to unilaterally defend him, but he has an opinion like everyone else and a soapbox to express it from. And TVG does suck. They see themselves as the product and racing as the packaging. Granted I'm not in the demographics they're probably looking for (then again, with their ad lineup of scooters and help with your 'woodworking', at times I have no idea what their demos are). I only watch because of their exclusivity for some tracks that look much better on my 52" TV than my monitor. But I threw-up in my mouth a little when I heard KRude clucking (yes, I said clucking) Carla Gaines' name over and over the other day. Just dont find that 'entertaining' nor informative. As I've said ad nasueum, I'd be happy with the Kanadian HPI feed (they just seem to do everything right up there - if only their weather didn't suck :o )which shows track feeds all day. Lil talking heads sometimes, but to them racing is the product and everything else is secondary.

And lets' talk ROI - I'm sure everyone has their own idea what is profitable for them. For some, its what 20-30%? For bridgejumpers, 5% seems adequate at times. It's subjective based on your churn isn't it? Again, it would be an illusionary ROI since they don't bet half of what the checkmark. So while I do agree with Rog that seeing their ROI would be (somewhat) informative I guess, doesn't mean a hill of beans to me but again, I know racing and I'm not their target demos.

And while his better training days may be behind him for the time due to his health, did you hear Baffert on the show Saturday? Or Sheriffs last week? Obviously others in the sport have respect for the man or I guess they wouldn't come on his show. It's not like they have a book to plug or they're gonna make more money if you bet on their horse (OK, maybe a little based on increased churn for future purses). But I believe they come on his show because he asks them to and they want to. That speaks volumes to me about the man. He seems to have respect from a number of his peers.

Let's get to the bottom of this.

Why is Stein angry at TVG?

Did they screw him at one time or something?

Did they charge him a quarter too much?

Did they publicly bash him?

There has to be a reason he despises TVG.

Mine was always the fact that TVG never showed my local track races live (or showed them on a delayed basis and claimed they were live) because they were picking 17 horses in every race and posting P4s that covered every horse in every race multiple times in lieu of showing a live race somewhere. Or doing something really idiotic and assinine on air (Matt?) while a real live race was running somewhere.

What exactly is Stein's problem with them?

I used to listen to Stein until he asked-er-told me to stop. Interesting way to boost ratings.

Todd T Schmuck has bashed Roger for years with disparaging remarks about him and disrespecting his training accomplishments.

Not only have they bashed him, IMHO, criticism of TVG is warranted. When all those selections are posted, is it to help the viewers or is intended to induce viewers to bet through TVG? By not posting the ROI or some type of record, a viewer is led to believe these "experts" are smarter than they are, which in many if not most cases is not true. Finally, TVG shows many races other than live, but neglects to tell the viewers in nearly all those cases. They have the unfortunate luck to have the Woodbine family of tracks, which show the time in the upper right. It is downright embarrassing to have a host say something like "We'll let you know how that photo turned out once the judges post it." or "We'll have the prices as soon as the race goes official" for races that were completed 10 or more minutes earlier.

Bottom line is TVG could end alot of the criticism by listening to people like us. The problem is they think they're smarter than us.

Correctamundo Exstat, TVG does deserve some bashing, but from whom?

Surely not a radio commentator who has purchased a timeslot for the past 17 years where the backbone of the show has been to provide race selections, and not free either, but by calling a 900# and making a deposit. In all those years, did Roger ever post up the ROI for his posse of handicappers, ever, once? Yet he cries out for TVG to do it? Seems to me like he's the wrong guy to be handing out criticisms about how another franchise goes about their similar business.
And remember...Things work out best when you make the best of the way things work out.
