TTBM (tr) - Museum Morons Edition

I own two old postcards that show Churchill Downs and/or the vicinity underwater.

So I ax you - Why in HELL have a number of horse racing artifacts been damaged or destroyed this week because they were stored in the BASEMENT of the Kentucky Derby Museum?

I also heard today that the Derby Museum has already made plans to be closed for at a minimum August and September.

Damage at Ky Derby Museum Hits $4 Million

The projected costs of the cleanup and estimated damages are now reaching over $4 million. So far, 100 pieces have been selected for conservation by art specialists (the bulk of which are fine art paintings at this point). These pieces represent only a section of the water-damaged collection.

Katherine Veitschegger, the museum's curator of collections, said she is hopeful that all of these pieces can be successfully repaired. The museum has not identified any item that appears to be a total loss.

A museum blog link has now been posted on the home page — http://www.derbymuseum.org — for daily updates, questions and comments during the flood cleanup.

Due to the closure of the Kentucky Derby Museum during clean-up of flood damage, the tour operations and gift shop will move to the Churchill Downs Store located through Gate 17 at the track. The new location will open at 8:00 a.m. on Aug. 7. See the Web site for detailed times.

The second day of the clean-up continued Aug. 6 with carpet tiles being removed on the main floor and basement areas, drying and sanitation taking place. On Aug. 7, many of the exhibits will be dismantled and the main floor walls will be drilled for water inspections.

Also, the library in Louisville had all their brand new computers that were to be installed next week stored in the basement and they were all floating. I guess living in Florida it surely makes me gasp to hear about storing anything of value in a basement. My dogs don't even bury things here.

Del Mar has flooded on a couple of occasions.

It was before I started working here, but I understand that the offices, which were under the old Clubhouse, got quite wet. When the new facility was built in the 1990s, the offices were elevated several feet. (Fingers crossed in case we ever get rain again!)

Didn't Del Mar horses have to be evac'd a couple of years ago or is my memory even worse than I thought?(maybe it was the horse park). BTW, Becky, I thought you lived in BAMA, or is that just your fave in football?

In recent years, they've mainly evacuated horses TO our stable area during fires. There generally aren't any horses on the ground during our "rainy" season.
