Morning Breakdown?

Postby Pegasus44 » Tue Jul 28, 2009 7:45 am

Saw the ambulance on the track Tues about 7:30 am....any idea on who it was? Rider OK?
Screen was up, saw what looked like an equine laying on the track, I hope I'm wrong.

I've included the link here as url is required when quoting from another source -- MaryS

Exercise rider Jorge Soto was taken to Scripps Hospital in nearby La Jolla on Tuesday morning after being injured when his mount, the filly Maggie and Hopie, suffered a catastrophic fracture in the homestretch during a workout.

Soto was complaining of shoulder pain, according to Jack Carava, the trainer of Maggie and Hopie.

"It didn't seem bad, but he was complaining of shoulder pain, so he went to the hospital to be examined," Carava said.

The accident happened just before the mid-morning renovation break. Because the ambulance was away from the track transporting Soto, the track's reopening for training was delayed, for safety's sake, until the ambulance returned. The track normally reopens just after 8 a.m, but it was not until 8:25 a.m. that horses were allowed back on the track.

Maggie and Hopie, 4, most recently had won a $25,000 claiming race at Hollywood Park on July 4. Carava said she had to be euthanized because of her injuries.

Maggie and Hopie is the fifth horse to be euthanized at Del Mar in the past 10 days. Three were the result of incidents in races, two in workouts.

As terrible as these thing are, they seem to occur in bunches. I can't recall as many incidents during the Holly Park meet. There seemed to be a lull since the start of Santa Anita (which had number of incidents) and the end of Holly Park's meet. Either way and on any surface it sure does suck.

Rider hurt, horse euthanized
Was the drug test on Maggie and Hopie positive or negative for cortisone/snake venom? Solely,
out of respect for Maggie and Hopie and Exercise rider Jorge Soto family.

I don't know check www.thesmokinggun.com , maybe they will post the post mortem. I don't think any of us here suspect Jack Carava of any funny business.

Unlike what your see on CSI or Law & Order, tox screens usually take about 6 weeks to come back for humans. Doubt it's much faster for horses.

My understanding is that they are sent to UC Davis for analysis and if anything "funny" is found it is reported back to the CHRB for once of those $500 fines and/or 30 day reduced to 3 day suspensions. Turnaround time, last I heard is about 3-6 months.

I can only hope and pray that this is a trend that does not continue. :(

Amen to that.

According to the Blood Horse, six horses have been lost so far at Del Mar
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... at-del-mar

Saratoga had one fatality (on turf) on opening day, http://www.drf.com/news/article/105918.html , and another horse in that same race was vanned off with a suspensory injury.
I bet on a horse at ten-to-one. It didn't come in until half-past five.
My horse was so late getting home, he tiptoed into the stable.
