Lots of truly gifted artists over the centuries have not been such upstanding citizens in their personal lives. Amoral, philandering, syphiltic, psychotic, drug user, alcoholic, liar, gambler, degenerate, murderer, et al - take your pick, many of the very best weren't such nice people or model citizens. It's just that now their behaviors would be scandalous at best, illegal at worst. No excuses being made but just because a person is outstanding at his or her craft doesn't make them a model citizen. If we had personally personally some of the great writers, painters, sculptors, physicians, philosphers, playwrights, athletes, we might not have liked them. Now the spotlight is everywhere and numerous laws are in place to protect people and animals. As it should be. Unfortunately great artists aren't without their demons.
Poor PatV, he is as flawed as he is gifted. His loss and ours too.
