Del Mar Racetrack's Opening Day 2008

Race fans throughout the country await Del Mar's Opening Day of their race season for more than just the horses. Everyone who is anyone (as well as those who aren't anyone!) show up for the festivities of Opening Day. This year's was no exception. Over 43,500 fans showed up for the record day on Wednesday, July 16th breaking attendance records as well as the handle ($$ bet).

Attracting such a massive crowd is indeed a rare occurrence, but on the opening day of racing at Del Mar Racecourse on the 16th of July 2008, they came very close. More than forty-three thousand spectators rushed through the racecourse gates to get a good seat and place their wagers. It is a record number of spectators, just a few hundred short of the 44,181 who showed up to watch Cigar."

I agree the economy and higher prices will likely have an adverse effect on opening day attendance.
