It wasn't Shirreffs call.. Arnold Zetcher related how he had called John up some time ago and suggested that since there was nothing on the coast for Zardana, he had found another race for her. When Zetcher told John it was in Rachel's comeback race, Shirreffs was said to have chuckled at the news.. It was Zetchers call to run in New Orleans.
A few months earlier, Sherriffs had went before the cameras after Zardana had won the Bayakoa on the main track and said that it Zetchers idea, not his own, to run Zardana on the synthetic main. In doing so, he was giving credit to the owner and taking the spotlight off himself.. Yesterday, in a related matter, after Zenyatta won.. Jerry Moss suggested Zetcher was likely to want to go in the Apple Blossom too.
Arnold Zetcher is his own man. He didn't work all those years and make those many millions so he can have other men tell him what to do with his money.. Same with Jess Jackson.
I don't think any of us, including Shirreffs , thought that Zardana had that kind of race in her.. But with that win, the question again arises.. How good is Rachel and who can she beat? I think that lingering question
is the reason why they are backing out now.. It's about Rachel's legacy and Jacksons pride..
