MISTAKEN IDENTITY SAVES THEBUCKSTOPSHERE

On Feb 12 2010, Laurie Lane, ReRun Program Director, received a frantic call from Bev Dee, founder of Bright Futures Rescue in Ohio. About 140 horses (many Thoroughbreds) were crammed into kill pens at the infamous “Sugar Creek” auction in line to be loaded onto a trailer headed for slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Tattoo numbers had been pulled for many of the horses in an attempt to find their connections and spare them from the horrors of what was to come.
One Thoroughbred, “Thebuckstopshere,” --who was adopted out by ReRun in 2004-- was reportedly in this line headed for slaughter. Unable to locate or contact the adopter, Lane sprung into action and pleaded with the meat dealer to pull the horse and make a private sale. Paying $375, the injured horse was pulled and Lane made several more calls to get immediate transport and overnight stabling for Buck. His face revealed the trauma of his journey through a Kentucky auction, double-decker trailering to Ohio, and crowded pens of terrified horses. After being tended to and cleaned up, he made his seven hour journey to ReRun’s farm in New York where he is now safe.
This horse’s story took an interesting twist when we discovered he was NOT, in fact, the horse ReRun adopted years ago whose name was “Thebuckstoopshere”, but a horse by Montbrook born in 2006 (2 years after the ReRun horse had been adopted) and named “Thebuckstopshere”. Because his name, less one letter, mirrored the name of the ReRun horse he was spared from a horrible fate.
ReRun will take back any horse that we learn is no longer with its original owner or is at risk. Time was of the essence to save this horse and Thebuckstopshere was the fortunate victim of “Mistaken Identity.” A host of other TBs in the Sugar Creek kill pen last week were not so lucky. As a testament to what this 2006 foal went through, our NY Farm Director, Sue Swart, gave him the barn name “Trooper”.
