Actually, Wednesday’s Del Mar card is eerily similar to the Solano County Fair's opening day card for this Wednesday. Matter of fact if it wasn’t for the La Jolla Mile, I probably would get the cards mixed up and ride at the wrong track.

OK, a few things:

1) Enough with all the drama about the lack of quality of the Opening Day card. One division of the Oceanside is enough, as far as I am concerned. I have had horrific luck w/that race over the years, so I am glad to see a full field of 10k platers running instead. Maybe we can get a few double digit prices to light up the toteboard. If you are looking for quality, go to the Clubhouse and start people watching. You won't be disappointed.

2) Not sure why, but when everyone comes down to Del Mar on Opening Day expecting cool ocean breezes, they are bound to be a bit disappointed. Just my opinion, but Opening Day always seems to be humid and hot, and then you factor in the crowds, and it seems downright sweltering. Then again, I am over 300 lbs....so maybe it's just b/c I am freaking obese. Who knows?

3) Bully's North will be the place to be from 8 Am through the noon hour. Why? Because I will be there. :-) No, seriously, a great vibe in this place, and they usually give away the cool Bully's hats....it's a great place to ease into Opening Day, study the form, watch the early eastern races on TVG, etc....

A bunch of uninformed players will be at opening day. Plenty of habitual losers making the exotic pools swell. How many days will go by before someone hits the Pick 6? How many days before someone hits the Super-High Five? I always get excited when I see these two wagers carry-over. My confession is that since the early seventies I enjoyed just looking at the total money wagered at the track, I'd buy the newspaper just to look at these numbers. Of course I only played the illegal numbers game and for one mutual game the last three numbers were the lucky number for the day. I wish your superfecta play comes like you picked them and pays $25-$75 grand.

10% of the Del Mar handle comes from bettors at the track. Of the money bet at the track I would guess that 50%+ is bet by "informed" bettors who generally bet 10-20 times more than casual uninformed bettors. So that would leave 5% of the pool to the uninformed players who may or may not make a wise bet because even bad bettors win some of their bets. And many of the uninformed like to follow what their informed friends tell them to bet. The net result is that there is more handle but the betting patterns aren't very skewed.

There are three races I'll especially look forward to, and I hope I put this information down correctly.

Race 8 - Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds - 1 mile on the turf. Azul Leon, breaking from post 4, may be interesting to watch to see if he's regained his earlier good form. Nashoba Express, the gray-roan colt, and half brother to Nashoba's Key, is also in the mix, and will break from post 12. I don't wager, but perhaps there will be sentimental money on him, unless he's already supposed to be the best in there.

Race 9 - Claiming - F & M, 4 and up - 6 1/2 furlongs on the Poly. Jen's New Chapter will go from post 10. This horse has been in my virtual stable for the past few years but I haven't really kept track of her, so now I'll have a chance to see what she can do.

Race 10 - Maiden claiming - F & M, 3 and up - 1 1/16 miles on the Poly. Eleventh Hour will run and I vaguely remember that she was involved in something freaky not too long ago. She may have abruptly hit the rail with the jockey doing a superb job of saving her and himself; perhaps that was another horse, I don't recall. It just seems this horse was involved in something. I'll watch her break from post 2.
