Looks like we might be getting the race we all want, what else could they be annoucing????
Fueling speculation that it is setting the stage for a first-ever matchup between Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra and champion older mare Zenyatta, Oaklawn Park has scheduled a Feb. 4 announcement of “A Race for the Ages."
The Hot Springs, Ark., track sent notices Feb. 2 for an invitation-only breakfast to be held at 10 a.m. (CST) at the track. Promotions for the event said it would include the announcement “regarding one of the greatest stakes in our 106-year history,” according to the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record.
While no other details of the announcement were made, it fueled speculation that the track would boost the $500,000 purse of the April 3 Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) as a lure to the connections of Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, the only two candidates for Horse of the Year honors in 2009.
Rachel Alexandra is owned by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick and Zenyatta is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss.

Mr Purple, how many can OP hold and not be packed in like sardines? Also I was wondering why no turf course? thank you
I wonder if Fredo's casino bus could make that long a journey
Will Rachel get a prep before this race?

The Ap*le Blossom is just a couple of months away... I don't see how she could possibly get a prep.. I think Rachel is scheduled for her first serious work this week sometime.. Under normal circumstances, 8 weeks training off a serious break, is imo, not enough to bring a horse to their peak.. Yes, Rachel could be ready for a race, but I think that if she is going to hold Zenyatta, she will need to be dead fit..
I think Zenyatta will likely go unless they weight her too high.. and I think Rachel will pass..
Undefeated champion Zenyatta could return to racing in the $250,000 Santa Handicap (gr. I) on March 13 at Santa Anita.
Rachel Alexandra’s training had been compromised due to the wet weather in New Orleans, according to majority owner Jess Jackson, and a possible showdown against Zenyatta in the April 3 Apple Blossom (gr. I) at Oaklawn seems highly unlikely at this point.
Smart one Lucky Duck.
And some kind of "morning" morning line? It's early, but I would peg Z at even money and RA 6-1.
"The bill approved in Congress to avert the so-called fiscal cliff would bring the first major tax increase on high earners in 20 years."

Could Jackson finally be done hiding now that he has his award??? I sure hope so ... I'd love to see this happen.
And if Zenny vs. RA IS announced tomorrow ... Would Jackson DARE scratch Rachel as opposed to face Zenny???
I don't see how either Jerry or Jackson could show their face if this race is announced and they scratch ...
And if they announce anything other than a Zenyatta/Rachel showdown tomorrow ... Oaklawn should be ashamed because there is NO other race at this point in the industry that could be legitimately dubbed "A race for the ages" ...
And ... Once again ... If this race happens and I am wrong and Rachel beats Zenyatta ... As I have ALWAYS said ... I will very humbly and sincerely give plaudits and credit to Rachel ...
Of course I love Zenyatta and I obviously think she's better ... But if they face each other head to head and Rachel wins ... I will give credit to the victor with NO excuses ...
Conversely if Zenyatta wins, I will be happy ... VERY happy ... But I'll be gracious too.
The only thing worse than a sore loser is a bad winner
I played TONS of sports throughout my life and always talked sh*t before and during .... But NEVER after ... That's just classless.
Before and during is something that makes sports and discussions a lot of fun ... It engenders competition and hopefully draws the best from your opponent ... And one always wants that competitiveness in the sporting world and your adversary's best effort ...
But if you win ... or are proven right ... No need to rub anything in ... That's classless ...
Soooooo ... If the race comes off ... May they both give their best effort and run their best race ...
I personally don't want it to even be close ... I'd love Zenyatta to trounce Rachel and leave no doubt ...
But if Rachel wins ... I'll be FIRST in line to compliment her and give her proper credit ...
And then ... be hoping for a rematch and a different outcome ...
