P-Val jets to Australia for Cannonball ride
By Nicholas Godfrey 2:20PM 23 JAN 2010 USA:
Troubled jockey Patrick Valenzuela has a major assignment in Australia next weekend when he is set to partner Royal Ascot runner-up Cannonball in the Coolmore Lightning Stakes in Melbourne
The Flemington contest, the opening leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, is Australia's number one sprint, worth Aus$500,000 and won in recent years by subsequent Ascot scorers Choisir, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast.
US trainer Wesley Ward, who also saddled a double at the royal meeting this year, is breaking new ground with Golden Jubilee Stakes second Cannonball, owner by Ken and Sarah Ramsey.
"I'm hoping it's a very successful trip,'' said New Orleans-based Valenzuela, 47, who will be visiting Australia for the first time. "I'm very thankful that Mr Ramsey picked me to ride the horse.''
