Drinking and eating on Opening Day?

Postby Ogygian » Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:53 am

OK posters, where do you like to eat before or after the races at Del Mar? Any favorite bar or restaurant you like?

How about Opening Day? Where will you be?

For me, I have become a creature of habit over the years. We start at Bully's North every year in the morning, w/breakfast around 8:00 AM. From there, we usually build towards drinking a few brews or Bloody Mary's there, then heading over to the track for the races.

After the races, like a freaking Pavlovian dog, I sprint/run/take a cab over to Fidel's........where we eat like kings and recap the day.

In my younger years, I would continue the party from there...........but at 42, I am like a $5,000 plater with many miles on me....so that's out for now.

Where do you like to eat before or after the races? Party/drink/hang out?

Ahhhh..... Bloody Mary's at my house in Carmel Valley at 9:00 AM. We should have about 6-8 people over... I usually have some bagels too. A good staple food to carry you through a day of drinking.....

Depart at 10:15 AM..... and remember avoid Hwy 5 at all costs (back roads)!!!

Then off to dinner..... for many years I did the En Fuego after party with Dave Wakling for $40.00 and it included a buffet. Now that I'm older too (OMG!!!) I've toned it downed a bit and head to dinner at variety of different locations.... Market, Poseiden, Paradise Grille..... blah blah blah!!! Can't go wrong with the DM Plaza to continue a day with sites that the eyes just won't soon forget.....eye candy out the whazoo :p

Is it Wednesday yet???

we'll usually start the day over at philippe's
http://www.philippes.com/

on alameda street around 8:30am. with their offer of $0.09 coffee, that alone does attract a gang of homeless fools as well so one couldn't ask for a better atmosphere for breakfast in my opinion. here's a secret though, it's prolly a wise idea to bring along a packet of plastic utensils that one generally gets at el pollo loco just in case. i suppose it's better to be safe than sorry, etc.

for lunch, i'll grub on some free dmtc press box delicacies which comes in handy because i'm generally broke by race 2. eating isn't the same though without trading insults with everybody's second favorite paisa cuco talamantes but you kinda get over it by the weekend.

dinner will commence at el tepeyac manuel
http://laeastside.com/wp-content/upload ... peyuck.jpg

in boyle heights so if anybody is down for a manuel's special
http://theguide.latimes.com/east-la/res ... ac-venue-1

it's on me if i still gots any cash left.

There is a place right NEXT to Fidel's. Can't remember the name, but it's just as good.

I guess the two places have a rivalry of sorts. I ate at the "other" place once by mistake.....and it was excellent.

I believe the place next to Fidel's is "Tony's Jackal". I like a nice pre-race from Board and Brew in Del Mar.

Tony's Jacal. I think it's better than Fidel's, or at least more fun.
Thank God for the Federal Reserve. You can't have big government or big wars without them.

For more casual dining try Los Olas for fish tacos. The best on PCH
