I believe they were given racing dates but have they actually agreed they will race? Wer'e just days away from January 2010. Wouldn't Santa and the other SoCal tracks have to emergency scramble if between now and the end of April Hollywood announces they can't put together a meet?
I hope for all of us that love California racing they have more forsight than what appears. I'm not going into what racing surfaces are best(we'll leave that to AM over at Pace), but what about 4 day race weeks. Add one race more to the Thursday-Sunday week. The three days off will give trainer, horse, bettor, and all involved an effective extra day. Field size would significantly improve, especially if weeks off are given between SA-HOL(or whoever) and before DM and after Fairplex. I know track employees don't like the loss of a workday and I totally understand. But the 4-day and less weeks schedule is the easiest way to benifit the sport right now while we wait for other solutions to not let this great sport die in Cali.
