With 2009 soon to be in the rear view mirror, I would like to make some New Years resolutions when it comes to wagering and the horse races in general.
I hereby resolve to calibrate and structure my wagering better. Often, I bet the same amounts on races where I have very different feelings in terms of confidence in my selections. Why do I do this?
I hereby resolve to stop taking the cheap route on P4's and narrowing selections too much. Yeah, great, I saved $12 by not adding that horse, but he just won by three open lengths in the last leg at 19-1. Damn.
I hereby resolve to continue to learn more about the conditions book, and pick up on profitable patterns from barns when I can.
I hereby resolve to stop betting on low profile connections who haven't won a race since the Bush administration. The first Bush administration, that is. There is a reason they are low profile.
I hereby resolve to cease my complaining about the various TVG hosts. I have actually grown to like and admire many of them, especially Ron Ellis, Dave Weaver, Mike Joyce, Les, Rich Perloff, Matt Carrothers, etc
I hereby resolve to stop overbetting exotic pools and focus on getting back to basics with win bets.
I hererby resolve to stop betting on tracks with obscene takeout.
I hereby resolve to stop hating people in front of me in line at the windown at simulcast facilities like Los Al.
I hereby resolve to stop hating people using the SAMs and taking more time to complete their wager than it takes the average American to refinance their home mortgage.
I hereby resolve to betting less and enjoying the races more.
I hereby resolve not to bet on horses ridden by Rafael Bejarano. It's not that he's not a great jock, it's just that we can't get along. I can't ever seem to hook it up w/him, so why not just stop trying?
I hereby resolve to continue learning from professional handicappers, fellow fans, and anyone else in horse racing who offers a different perspective than my own.
I hereby resolve to stop obsessing about the following subjects: Free House, Ogygian, the whereabouts of Freddy Fong, and the Opening Days of SA and Del Mar.
I think I can work on most of these except maybe the last one.
What are your resolutions in terms of horse racing, or wagering, for next year?
"...I hereby resolve to stop hating people in front of me in line at the windown at simulcast facilities like Los Al.
I hereby resolve to stop hating people using the SAMs and taking more time to complete their wager than it takes the average American to refinance their home mortgage...".
I can only speak for myself, but I absolve you of all blame if you break either of these two resolutions.
As Matt said today - the same resolution every year:
ALWAYS BET AGAINST THE BRIDGE-JUMPERS!
Was watching the Quarter's the other night and Joyce said he was going to go on vacation for like a month and when he comes back to the set he will have a full mountain man beard (the days of the trimed up goatee are gone) and not having gotten a haircut.I am sure he will out but this is what he promises the racing fans upon his return. He seems weak and wouldn't be able to take the constant itching such a style change would bring.
Mr. Super Bowl
If it is bet, they will take it.
