Street Cry, nice stallion but not nearly enough wins to be on a Horse of the Decade list, Bernardini ran for a little over a year which hardly qualifies as a DECADE, Medaglia d'Oro lacks enough quality wins to be included. Peppers Pride was included more or less as a footnote as indicated in the write up BUT was included because she ran off 16 straight victories, but I guess perfection isn't enough for some.
Other than that, what specifically is the embarassment. of the list? Seems pretty solid for a non-racing mag.
"20. PEPPERS PRIDE
This mare never ran outside her home state of New Mexico, which means that she never faced top-class competition. She also never lost in 19 career starts, a record for any North American racehorse. Peppers Pride broke the previous record of 16 consecutive victories with a win at Zia Park Racetrack on Oct. 4, 2008. She was retired in 2009 and bred to the regal Tiznow, which will provide a interesting test case as to whether a mare from the wrong side of racing's tracks can combine with a Prince Charming to produce greatness."
Aside from being one of only two horses in the last decade to win 10 graded stakes races, Congaree also won Grade I races at 7, 8, 9, and 10 furlongs. That's more graded stakes than Lava Man by the way. His 3rd place finish in the Kentucky Derby was the best non-winning performance in a Kentucky Derby of the decade and one of the best of the last 20 years. He and Medaglia d'Oro did all of the running in the 2003 BC Classic when they set the table for Pleasantly Perfect, who was a very nice racehorse himself.
I'd put Congaree's accomplishments well beyond that of Lava Man. Not only were the older horses during Congaree's era a heck of a lot better, but he showed tremendous versatility and ran basically two bad races in the latter part of his career, a sloppy Met Mile and a failed attempt in the Del Mar Mile.
Street Cry and MDO were not only better horses than Birdstone, but they're also better sires! He gets inclusion for one win and being the sire of MTB and Summer Bird?
The crack about Peppers Pride's perfection is cute but she has no business being on a serious list. The thing is, this clearly isn't a serious list.
