First question: Does anybody know the Hanshin course and the direction the horses run(btw, what are the two directions called anyway?)? Second, do the PP's designate which races are run which way? Third and final question, does a particular track ALWAYS run their races in the same direction. I guess you can also ask these questions with regards to Euro races. I thank anybody that can help in advance.
1. Clockwise (as opposed to counter-clockwise).
2. From my experience with AUS racing, the PPs always list the direction.
3. Yes, except on that kooky backwards day in (IIRC) Florida.
Finally, if you are going to bet on the overseas races, I've had the best luck when comparing their odds to our (they maintain separate pools). You can find some juicy overlays in our pools.
Thanks Doug. I was able to find out from the TVG program that Hanshin is counter-clockwise. But the program with PP's they provide do not show(at least that I can see) which way they have run in their previous races. BTW, it's interesting to note that TVG's "hand-out" program and PP's say they're from Emerald Downs. Just curious as to why from there. I like your idea about comparing pools as sometimes in the past I've only based my bets on the biggest overlays, without even handicapping. Here's to some massive payoffs, hopefully, like they had a few weeks ago.
I'm thinking it's clockwise, although they're calling it "right-handed". Guess we'll see in a couple of hours.
JRA RACECOURSE INDEX MAP
Tokyo, Nakayama, Kyoto and Hanshin are known as the “big four” of the 10 racecourses of JRA, and, along with Chukyo, all GI races are held at these five courses. Three racecourses, Tokyo, Niigata and Chukyo, have counterclockwise courses and the other tracks have right-handed courses.
Also, here it says it's run clockwise.
2008-present: Hanshin Racecourse, 1,800 meters, clockwise

I've ended up on the outside horse, Wonder Acute, although he's 8-1 ontrack right now and 7-1 here.
I also like the longshots 5, 12, and 14.
I'm so backwards in the digital age I can't even read my own watch. I meant clockwise, in reverse of "our" racing. Had the 1 horse in the last since he was coming off 3 great wins and looked superb in the padock. Also, heard he was favorite at Hanshin, so figured the 4-1 wasn't that bad. Only put me even for their short card though. Will say the U.S. horses always seem to be a bad bet there, no matter if they ship from the East coast. I guess all dirt tracks aren't the same, are they?
regarding Emeralds Downs on the TVG program
from TVG site
"Wagering on the Japanese races through TVG will come via Emerald Downs, the Seattle track that serves as North American host for JRA racing. Emerald Downs holds the rights to the OTB business on JRA Racing."
