This is horse racing. I'll put aside Beyer and Crist for the moment.. On Jackson.. Nobody begrudges an owner or horseman for doing what he thinks is right for his horse. Jerry Moss said as much when reporters were trying to get him to comment on Rachel's non-appearance at the BC. All Moss would say is; I believe in the Breeders Cup." And all of us, even you, NTamm, know that if the BC was in New York this year on dirt, Zenyatta would have been there - READY TO RUMBLE. To your knowledge, has anybody close to Rachel ever suggested that Rachel can't handle or excel over a synthetic racetrack? I'll answer that. The answer is; No. Next question: Did Jackson object to synthetics last year PRIOR to Curlin's losing race in the BC Classic. Answer; No.
Here is what Jackson said while campaigning for HOTY in his Blood Horse interview after Curlin lost the Classic; "I especially want to extend my deep gratitude to Curlin’s fans. In the end, we ran Curlin as much or more for the enjoyment and inspiration of the fans and sport than for ourselves. He ran on all surfaces, in all weather, and against all competition." Please take note of the underlined part.. where Jackson asked the voters to consider that he did it for the fans, for the good of the sport - on all surfaces.
Dude changed his tune.. Huh?
I see you're hitching your wagon again to Crist, as he is the one pushing the Ladies Secret issue on the DRF website.. I often wonder if you guys actually think for yourselves.. or do you just read articles that are anti synthetic or anti Zenyatta, and go "Yeahhhh - More negatives that I can hurl at the synthetic crowd and the Zenyatta fans?
Perhaps you and Crist wouldn't have an issue with changing the name of the Lady's Secret Stakes if Santa Anita had followed a prominent trend and renamed it to corporate sponsors.. Perhaps the Victorias Secret Stakes.. Or the Frosted Flakes Stakes? I jest, you're trying to make a valid point, aren't you? So, let's address that.. The serious part of the charge is that the name change and advocacy for Zenyatta is some kind of plot to affect HOTY voting? Right?
Excuse me, while I laugh at you and Crist for an hour or two.. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... Are you guys serious? Do you think that renaming the Ladies Secret Stakes will affect one single Eclipse vote? Can you possibly believe that those hardboot sportswriters and racing secretaries care one iota about a renamed stakes race when casting their ballot? C'mon!
Talk to those 58,000 fans at Santa Anita on Breeders Cup Day .. Ask them how they feel about Ladies Secret? 50,000 of them won't even know who she is. Many were new fans there to see a great day of racing and hoping to see a great mare conquer the boys.. Some of the young people there weren't even born when Ladies Secret was running. Those young girls holding the Girl Power signs were there for Zenyatta.. not Lady's Secret.. This sport needs youth and a revival.. Zenyatta, at least for a day, brought everybody to their feet.
It's pretty simple. In business, it's called marketing. If you need new business, you try and bring in new people by appealing to the things they know and like.. To their credit, Santa Anita is trying to attract and keep the very same fans - and those like them - that showed up on Breeders Cup Day to watch the Great Zenyatta. Lady's Secret didn't bring a single fan to this years Breeders Cup. She may have brought fans in her day, but no more..
But Zenyatta brought many.. perhaps thousands.
So because Zenyatta got 58k people really excited, basically none of whom even bothered to show up to an over the top celebration for her, she deserves to have a stakes race named after her? Even if it removes from a stakes race the name of a horse who accomplished so much in a time when people actually gave a crap about racing? OK.
Look, the ultimate grasp at straws argument is that "well so and so created so many new fans, blah blah blah." The fact of the matter is that for most of the people who saw Zenyatta in the Classic or any other time it's a memory. She's gone. That's the fundamental problem with racing. There's no starpower because their shelf life is infinitessimal. So how is racing going to market Zenyatta now? She's retired. I'm not blaming the Moss' or anyone, they did a wonderful job with Zenyatta, it's just that her situation illustrates one of the biggest problems with our game.
Did I say that Schillingsworth's remarks were going to change any votes? Hell, I'd be willing to say his desperate attempt to endorse her as HOTY will probably turn more people off who were undecided. Although you folks out there on the racing island seem to have an inferiority complex, so I don't imagine it will stop.
