Another photo of Frankel and his dog Happy.
What a way to start the day...........There are two things I will always remember about Bobby Frankel. Before he stated training for Juddmonte, the claiming battles he had in the early 1980s with Gary Jones & Mike Mitchell. If the claiming game can be called poker, he played it in it's finest form. The other is for a stakes horse named Exbourne he trained for Juddmonte in the 1990s . The horse had the stones of a burglar, & I swore he raced on top of the rail at Hollywood one day. Gary Stevens talks about Exbourne in his bookThe Perfect Ride:
If one had asked Frankel or Humberto Ascanio, this horse is one of their favorites over all the years.
And then the supposedly gruff unfeeling man who passed on a championship day to stay home with his dog.
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride-
& If dirt were dollars we'd all be in the black
A few years ago I wanted to get a hold of Robert and Geri Witt who had horses with Frankel for years after their first trainer Tommy Doyle had passed. I was told the only way I could get their number was through Frankel. I wasn't keen on calling him. Several years before I saw Frankel destroy a pair of field glasses after Jolypha was given a--well--questionable ride and was beaten handily by Flawlessly at Hollywood Park. Since I had no choice, I called and he answered. After he almost hung up on me twice, I finally was able to stammer that I wanted to get ahold of the Witts so I could see if they had any old film or video on Sandy Blue an old favorite of mine who had the same name as the dog with whom I grew up. Once he heard that, he said, emphatically, "Why didn't you just say so!" and rattled off the number. Frankel was one of a kind. I was nine-years-old in 1972. I don't think I've ever attended the races in So. CA when Frankel didn't have a horse in. Bless him and his soul may he be with all his animals!
