Interesting, Bob - I had the same wins and exactas as you mentioned, but I was yelling for Zen when she made her move.
She made it look easy after making it tough on herself to close "against all those big, strong males".
Sorry RA, you beat Mine That Bird by a step or two, Zen would have been too much for you.
Not every one is a fan of Zenyatta ... But anyone who loves racing should be! How great for the sport is this!
In this field, she beat 4 to 6 horses better than any that Rachel has ever faced. I've been saying all along that the reason Jackson wouldn't send Rachel to to most lucrative race of her career was not fear of the surface, but fear of Zenyatta.
Seems to me now ... That Jackson was right ... He wouldn't have beaten Zenny. Rachel has never faced a field of the quality that Zenyatta just inhaled! The Preakness? Far inferior of a field to the Classic field today and ONE more stride and Rachel loses that to Mine That Bird. Mine That Bird comes in 7th or 8th today(Which is exactly where he belonged on paper).
Rachel in the Classic today does not beat Zenny. She doesn't beat Gio Ponti either, who also ran a great race.
And yes ... I did hit the trifecta on this ... SINGLING Zenyatta ... after seeing what her "also ran" stablemate Life Is Sweet did to the girls yesterday ... I was VERY reassured. Also VERY happy for Life Is Sweet yesterday.
I'm sorry ... The way I see it is Zenyatta today beat BETTER horses than Rachel has. Became the first female ever to win the Classic. Looked brilliant doing it and is 14 and 0.
Not to mention ... She showed up at the BIGGEST race of the year and beat the boys when Rachel's connections avoided it for fear of defeat.
Zenyatta is MY horse of the year!
Damn proud of her ... I LOVE her!!
How cool is it that the Ladie's Classic winner and the Classic winner are BOTH California horses???
Is it time to be Cali proud or what???
Guess the competition Zenyatta was beating all year may have been a little better than thought because she consistently smoked Life Is Sweet and Life Is Sweet easily blew past the other best girl's in the world!
Maybe so Bob ...
I'll give you SOME credit though ... You helped me hit the trifecta ... Cause I included Twice Over because of your write up ... Thanks!!
Now if you'd have only asked me for the winner ... We'd have BOTH cashed tickets on it with our collaborative effort.
What REALLY sold me on Zenyatta's chances here was the way Life Is Sweet blew away the other ladies yesterday.
I kept hoping during the year that they would send Life Is Sweet after Rachel this year and how cool it would have been if Zenyatta's also ran kicked Rachel's butt. How cool would THAT have been?
It's a shame it didn't happen ... Maybe NEXT year it will!
Didn't watch Alabama, I watched horse racing history. She's a top story all over the country tonight. That's pretty good for a dying sport. If Rip Van Winkle had won, it would have been a story for the people who had tickets and Mutton Chops. That's it.
I'm glad Twice Over and Gio hit the board. And I did have the exacta, as my picks are prone to finish second, but it didn't pay near as well as Gio/Twice Over would have, plus Gio's winning mutuel would have been nice. I'm still sick about it.
Enjoy your big California day. As for your ridiculous love of racing comments, are Phillies fans not fans of baseball if they're not happy the Yankees won?
We'll see in January if you get to gloat some more when they hand out the gold Eclipse. I'm assuming you will, but I'll disagree with that decision if it happens as well.

I'll have to watch my local news tonight and check my paper in the morning for the headlines to verify. That's the beauty of having rooting interest in a sport. I'll remember Pounced, Midday, Goldikova and Conduit fondly from the '09 BC, but I'll remember negatively the Classic as Gio Ponti getting beat with Twice Over in third. If my rooting interest Rip or Twice Over had won, I'd still have not been pleased with the betting aspect, but would have been excited for Coolmore and Juddmonte. To each their own as far as rooting interest.

FWIW, Z's win was #1 of the top ten sports moments of the day. Perhaps that was a product of ESPN's coverage of the event, but there's a whole lot of college football fans who got a big dose of horse racing on Sportscenter.
I've not been one of Zenyatta biggest fans, but I'll give her credit for what she did today. No, Rachel would not have beat her on this track which was playing to closers all day. The reason Z won't get HOY is because the majority of the voters do not like synthetic surfaces and - right or wrong - don't take synthetic specialists seriously.

I don't know of a race mare that Zenyatta could not have beaten throughout time. Her best race was on dirt and she won on three different variations of synthetic coming from dead last. She dealt with slow paces, going very wide and she over came it all. Not real easy to do. She is the greatest mare I have ever seen and Moss's are such great people for allowing this moment to happen today. I don't think any BC Classic anytime soon will provide what today did.
