there is some debate about that but by all accounts steroids were available sometime between 1910 and 1920, some other accounts say that german scientist perfected the purity and those were available in the early 1930s and were widely used on race horses for sure starting in the early 1930s. it is documented that they were used on seabiscuit but that was common with race horses and remained common until a couple of years ago when they were banned in horse racing. far more common in big league tracks than in the minor leagues because they are expensive. if i recall when a horse of mine was injected with equipoise it was about $200.00 for one injection, it took about 5 days to see any change but within 2 weeks he grew an inch gained 70 pounds and got so mean that you could barely go near him
As far as musculature goes, yes, you are right. However, steroids have many other benefits. The most important is breathing(prednisone is the most famous steroid for humans that have asthma).Winstrol helps breathing right away.Clenbuterol, which is a hot topic here on the east coast, helps breathing a lot and right away.So when Oscar was racing a horse right back, they were helped out a lot by the steroids.
