Always felt as though he needs a lesser circuit. He has never been a strong finisher and it's even more magnified since he rides better stock out here than most.
Certainly very disappointing and does raises a few questions. I do agree with Pat that a lesser circuit would fit fell with him as I feel he has gotten the more opportunities with several top guys gone at various points over the past couple of years.
I am under the opinion that the jockey colony this meet at Del Mar with the exception of Gutierrez and 1 or two others has been very underwhelming.
what has amazed me is the morning line on many of his horses,he is riding a lot of horses that have no chance to win, also he has ridden about 7 horses and there has always been another to beat him out despite beating the rest of the field by many lengths.....sunday would be a perfect example got beat by a molly pearson firster at huge odds....beat the rest of field by about 4 lengths....if you add 6-7 wins to his total you would be saying he is having a great meet.but many of his mounts have ZERO chance but strangely are morning lined low
Its a little puzzling how Talamo has fallen off at this meet. But in all fairness to Joe, All jockeys can have a down-meet. Obviously this current Del Mar meet is Joe's time for lull.
Still close examination over the years show certain Jockeys tend to dominate Del Mar over the last couple of years. Meaning Rafael Bejarano always seems to have a "Great Del Mar Meet" with only Martin Gacia & Garrett Gomez really being able to keep pace with Bejarano.
Imho, Bejarano's riding style perfectly suits the Poly-Track surface at Del Mar. If one remembers correctly it was Turfway Park also a Poly-Trac surface where Bejarano first burst on the USA racing scene via Peru. Bejarano's patient off the pace timed rides seems to help propel him to the Winners Circle @ Del Mar & of course he always has been a top Grass Race rider to boot, thus insuring a top 1 or 2 Jockey # of Wins slot at Del Mar. So when a Trainer has a top mount looking for a jockey, Who You Gonna Call? Well suffice to say its likely to be Bejarano.
Talamo has now been on 31 favorites and he's won ONE race with them. Regardless if you think he's been on horses that are overbet or bad morning lines he has won once with those favorites. Behind Bejarano he's riding the most chalk.
aug 21...he rode 6 horses today ...all of which I gave zero chance....ML 7/2...4-1....3-1...5-1....12-1....6-1...but be careful bejarano went on the same streak the last 6 weeks of Hollywood...and then...California is famous for putting jocks to sleep and then when you start looking the other way BOOOOOM
