And though there were whispers in Maryland during the Preakness that Del Mar is considering going back to dirt on its main track and eliminating Polytrack to be more attractive for the Breeders’ Cup, Harper said nothing is in the works on that right now. But he said he learned long ago to “never say never,” leaving the Del Mar door open to a dirt track in the near future.
For now, Del Mar, like others in the state, is concentrating on 2014 and helping the game survive in the troubled state.
“Our fall meet really depends on us getting the Breeders’ Cup dates,” Harper said. “That’s where the profit is. Santa Anita seems bent on getting it forever rather than sharing it. That seems to be the only disagreement in the dates schedule right now. It’s a matter of equity. Santa Anita is picking up 11 weeks, we’re picking up four or five. In order for us to maximize our purses and revenue for the industry we need that Breeders’ Cup dates.”

Might as well start working with Baffert immediately on how the new "dirt" surface will be composed. Clay, rocks, fine sand etc. The key is to make it so only horses on or near the lead can win. (By the way thats nearly every runner BB has). Only inconvenience for him was that the SA surface is so bad that he (BB) had to move most his horses to train over at HP, then just ship over for races across town.
OH my, huge news, read my other thread.
You can already see the wheels starting to fall off of trying to get a schedule down pat. The tracks are going to fight for each others dates and then if one gets more dates and loses a ton of money with them they will scale back on racing.
Based on Haper's comments, I don't think they want to run any sort of a fall meet unless they get the BC dates either as a host site for the event or the host simulcast venue in SoCal.
Frank wants those Breeders Cup dates. Del Mar wants the BC Dates. Joe Harper is willing to "share them," the problem I see is I do not think Frank is a sharing kind of guy and he holds nearly ALL the cards now in CA. I think if things dont go almost exactly like wants he is going take the gloves off and its going to get ugly. This whole thing could work out ok if SLRD gets turned into a Palm Meadows type place and you have some compromise, but I think the odds of it turning into a bad situation far outweigh the good.
What he wants and gets is two different matters.
Remember who runs the B C committee, Craig will be fair , however, it's coming to Del Mar regardless Mr S likes it or not.
What if he says I want them or I can't afford to run in CA and will close SA?
Dont think its all about having the actual BC, each wants to be track racing when the BC is running to get the simulcast revenue. They are stuck on simulcast already, not the actual BC.
As usual you were right on this one 2 years ago. We are all lucky to have someone like yourself who has so much knowledge in the field of horse racing and the business of the sport.
Mr. Super Bowl
If it is bet, they will take it.
I myself have gotten used to not seeing horses die everyday at Del Mar......the last year they had a dirt track you just held your breath everytime a horse worked in the mornings or ran in the afternoon. I like the polytrack and I really like when they dont listen to Baffert and the likes and let the surface function how it is supposed to and that means SLOW TIMES. Speed kills and the new dirt track at S.A. isnt fairing so well and this is the off meet. But in this industry they will always listen to the guys who stop their feet the most and cry like litttle girls. Baffert can complain about polytrack but didnt he win just about every stake there last year on the main track?
