Looking at the cards the past several days it is getting much worse by the week. Week ago Wednesday 1900 people on track and handle that was dreadful. Seeing tracks like Calder, Lone Star which were on the up swing or at least doing well absolutely drop off a cliff the last year or so, you have to put California in the realm of possibility of being next.
Dont really see how its going to turn around, as lower purses mean less horses, which mean even less handle. Not Good. Only a massochist can be looking forward to this fall HP meet. If you could card a couple wiener dog races during the day it would help fill the card, Martin (Panza).
Article from DRF about the purse cuts.
We are watching the demise of the sport in front of our very eyes. The way things have been done, must be n up and everything from management, to # of days racing, to business models all across the country have to be changed. If we are not careful, I am convinced the thoroughbred industry is going to be a shell of what it is now.
I realize when you've got horses on the grounds that haven't broken their Mdn, you card Mdn races & 2 yr olds gotta run before they turn 3, but when that's most of what is carded for the weekdays there are bettors that avoid those races like the plague. And won't spend an afternoon on track waiting for those 2 or 3 races that are for older horses.
If wishes were horses then beggars would ride-
& If dirt were dollars we'd all be in the black
Saturday feature is a $58k stake, starter allowance purse $20k, MDN 32's running for 16k purse. Where is the incentive to own a racehorse in CA? BIG trouble ahead boys. Looks like we all will be playing Turf Paradise, Philly Park and Zia Park in 5 years.
Please, Be-Leaf, Me, On, This.
"wish training costs would go down if purses do" LOL
That would mean these trainers actually have a clue. Was at HP other morning, the barn area is DEAD. That being said, majority of trainers have no grasp of how expenses have to come down. Some trainers have the top owners so this is no issue for them..Sheriffs, Sadler, Drysdale, Mandella, Baffert, etc maybe a couple others...But after that group the other 15-20 guys better take some action before its too late. Get rid of the 3% barn fee on wins that appeared out of nowhere last couple years, Trainers getting paid 10% down to 5th Give me a break, you run less than 2nd in 90% of the races now in CA owner is losing his ars. Trainer already making money on the $90+ day rate, run 3rd in a typical race in CA, owners gets $1300, which means the owner is losing about 3,000 per month and the trainer takes $130.00 more? It may already be too late to change the demise in CA. Cant understand why a trainer who is competent, does not put out a full page ad in the form, advertise an aggressive day rate, get rid of charging down to 5th, no add on barn take etc etc. Think he would have 50 horses in 24 hours.
