In a sign of potential trouble for California horse racing, trainer John Shirreffs, who guided Zenyatta to prominence, has decided to move to Belmont Park in New York with a stable of horses at the end of April.

No surprises here at all. I know that a few more SoCal maintay outfits are heading East.
If we have a few more stables go east it will most likely solve the problem of where to stable horses when HP closes.
The Dodgers Suck. No Championships in 25 Years. HAHA
Shirreffs said the split of his stable is partially a reflection on the changing circuit in Southern California. Shirreffs is based at Hollywood Park, which may close at the end of this year. Hollywood Park officials have not stated whether the track will be open for racing in 2014, and could be closed for residential and commercial development.
If that occurs, Santa Anita and Del Mar are expected to add racing dates. In the Los Angeles area, Barretts Racing at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif., is expected to request more Thoroughbred racing dates at times of the year when Hollywood Park previously ran.

Sheriffs is a classy guy and losing him for 8 months a year is not good, but he does not have a big barn so its not a huge deal really. Even though this would never happen, but wonder what would So Cal racing would be if Baffert took his monsters and his wealthy owners and said he was leaving CA? Sure some of those owners would find some other guys to take some of their stock in CA, but Baffert is the last thing that makes So Cal a major circuit. Without him, we become the minor leagues.
John the complainer.......He didnt like the synthetic race surfaces, even though the best horse he ever trained was undeafeated on it.
Santa Anita gets a new dirt surface yet John still trains his horses on a half a mile oval training track at Hollywood Park. He seems to be the kind of person who likes to stir the pot and even when the soup is made to his liking he refuses to eat it. Good luck and dont let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.
John does have a big stable.....he has one string at HP which is his first string training on the training track and a second string which trains at S.A. Makes sense huh?
I would think he will not be the last trainer to leave headed east. I would also say to the trainers on those eastern circuits who are awarded 3-4 horseman races a year that they find an easier circuit .
Mr. Super Bowl
If it is bet, they will take it.
I wonder if Sherriffs will get panned for going East like Rosario did...
Baf is 2nd in the Nation for all trainers. If he left that would only leave Dorf in the top ten, and he is a Nor/South Cal trainer. You would have to lose 2 more in the top 10 to squeeze Doug O'neill into 10th.
