Del Mar Moving Forward With Expansion Plans

Postby Southieboy » Wed Mar 13, 2013 4:55 am

The project would expand the turf course, but leave the polytrack alone. The overall size of the 7 furlong turf track would increase by about 25%. Ultimately, the increase could make it possible for the fairgrounds to host the Breeders’ Cup.

ok, I will bite. Regarding this article:

1)they are making the track safer--is the DM track unsafe?

2)archaeologists--what was the area used for before it was a racetrack?

3)hazardous substances--what was the area used for before it was a racetrack?

4)how do they do all this digging and all the monitoring yet leave the synthetic surface alone--are they going to dig around it?

Sorry, the Turf grows and the poly goes when they get the contract for the BC

When Del Mar get the BC, I tell you this, one will see one hell of a marketing program that will lite up the racing here in the United States

It will surpass Lone Star Park's BC as the worse parking nightmare in horse racing history.

All you would have to do is get there early--for Saturday's races, I would suggest Thursday morning. :D

Del Mar's marketing department is one of the tops in the country. The customer service is one of the worst of any track I've been to.
Sure looks like their positioning themselves to bid for a BC with the improvements to the turf course.I'm assuming they'll pave the dirt parking lot. I can't see the BC charging 30.00 to park in dirt. Hopefully they'll hire enough temporary employees to work the food and beverage stands. I know our beloved Joe Harper loves to see long lines. It's not a good idea to tell the San Diego Union we expect 35 to 40K in attendance for opening day and then have half the betting windows closed and not enough help to open all the concession registers. "Wow we didn't expect 38K people". Umm it was headlines in the paper! I'm sure they'll come up with a plan to have free shuttles from satellite parking lots on both days.If Monmouth and Lonestar can host a BC why not Del Mar?

As to the parking, they will have to handle it like a military operation. If not, parking wars will happen.

1) Making the turf course safer. It's WAY too narrow and is dangerously slippery when at all wet.

2) Guessing they'll be looking for Indian artifacts, of which there are many along the coast.

3) I don't know what they'll be looking for. People certainly weren't really careful about where the dumped stuff that we now think of as hazardous.

4) They're excavating the turf course, not the Poly. They'll protect it from the weight of excavation equipment crossing it.

Not safe to assume things. We're legally prohibited from paving the dirt lots.
