Dumbest Track Promotions in History

Postby Vince P » Tue Feb 19, 2013 8:38 pm

This one is tops.

I don't, and never will drink coffee so it really doesn't matter to me but GoldenGatebytheBay's latest promotion will be hard to top for cheapness and stupidity.

I saw a sign yesterday that said,

"Buy a GGF coffee mug for $6.00 and come back to GGF and get a refills for only $1.50."

Now I have no idea what a cup of coffee costs and really don't care but who in God's Holy Name thinks of something as dumb as this?

Do they really think fans will say, "Gee, I can get coffee and a mug with refills for only $7.50; heck I"ll come out to GGF."

Personally, if I was in GGF's marketing department, I would GIVE away the stupid mug with FREE refills with it to fans who come on out.

What is the dumbest race track promotion that you ever saw?

At the same time dumb and priceless - the Del Mar cap that has the horse logo about 20º off-center. That day we were all wearing our caps crooked to line-up the logo. We were ahead of our time, now many people wear their caps like that.

Wendy's has an offer now - buy a small mug for $1.99 and get a free Frosty anytime you bring it in and use it.
Bet that one's gone before the Vegas summer!

A few years back I was going to SA almost every Saturday when I lived at Casa De Fredo La Noche Al Fresco De Toluca Lake. I guess they were advertising a beach tote bag giveaway. When I received the 'swag" it was the size of a Royal Crown whiskey bag.Seriously it was pretty funny. It was the running joke at Frontrunners all day.SA eventually told everyone the original shipment from China didn't arrive in time so the marketing guy found these on sale from the Pomona fair.Honorable mention has to go the welcome mat DM gave away. It smelled like gasoline and burned tar. Gave off toxic fumes for a week so I tossed it.

I believe SA is trying to say the tote bag they are giving away big Cap day is a $40 value.

If you are talking about the tan cap with the black horse logo at the 20 degree angle, those were given away on PC Day 1996, when Cigar lost.

I can think of several horrible giveaways..the Santa Anita toxic "Un" Welcome Mat..the Hollywood Park Crown Royal totebag..the Del Mar red PC Day towel that actually REPELLED water and turned laundry pink..those PC Day TVG flip flops that hurt your feet within 5 seconds of putting them on..and the infamous black Del Mar button down dress shirt which the marketing dept didn't realize that only a Tool would wear a button down dress shirt with a racetrack logo on it..
