Mary, my husband, John told me that Del Mar tried years ago to get them (the State) to move that fair about a mile away at the Bing Crosby ranch? They refused, probably more than once.
It's too bad, because Del Mar could run June, July and August. Santa Anita could run though May. They could have the regular Fairplex fair meet. Santa Anita could have a fall meet through October, and perhaps Del Mar could pick up November dates to run the Turf Festival HP used to have?
Just an idea. I think it would work. Del Mar would not have the big crowds they do during August, but you could still make money....simulcasting, etc.
Of course this is wishful thinking, that the State/County would allow their precious fair to re-locate. They would still make the big money a mile down the road, wouldn't they? I think they would.

I've never heard that story. If it did happen, it was probably in the 1930s. I know Crosby and Pat O'Brien borrowed against their life insurance to complete the grandstand. Crosby's place was Rancho Osuna -- http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/ ... dition.htm -- in the middle of Rancho Santa Fe and about 5 miles from the track.

The folks in Rancho Santa Fe are rich enough a politically powerful enough that they've been able to block the installation of a couple of urgently needed traffic signals on the road through town for decades. Better chance of holding the Winter Olympics in Hell than the San Diego County Fair in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe.

We don't need Fairplex and although a turf course at Los Al would be the optimum choice a bull ring turf course wont do. So here is a possible alternative when/if the horses shift to Los Al. I am guessing that there are about 12 turf races a week at SA(3 per day X 4 days) Why not run a day card of only turf races, max 12 races a day, at SA. Lets say the races are run on a Friday or Saturday. On that same day you run a night card of TB at Los Al. My guess is that most of the turf horses will remain in training at SA so no shipping problems. I think a one day a week turf meet at SA wont hurt the turf course, since it will have 6 days to recover. I doubt we lose any turf days to rain in June/July. Yes, it might be hot at SA in June and early July but it wouldn't be anywhere near as hot, or humid as a day back east, when they run in the 90's with much higher humidity. It solves an immediate problem of not losing turf horses to shipping out of town. Is it a long day for many, yes. But its only one day a week so lets do it on a Saturday when travel between the tracks is less than on a Friday.
Opinions?

Ernie, this sounds like one of those weird dreams you have when you eat too much Indian food right before bedtime..

LOL Hey, it would work for all of us! Perhaps, if we all visulize this long enough, we can manifest it? However, Mary brought us back to reality....it's all about the $$$$$$ and that's that.
