Kentucky Derby Tickets

I'm planning on making my first trip to the derby. How should I purchase tickets? Do I use the same strategy of waiting last minute as with the Breeders' Cup or am I stuck at paying the premium either way?

If they have the nerve to not supply patrons with a free bench I would tell them to stick it and head to Vegas.
