It's ballot time for racing Hall

For the first time since 1996 and only the second time in four decades, the Baseball Writers of America have not elected anyone into the Hall of Fame.

Thankfully, this will not happen in 2013 regarding the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's August inductions in Saratoga Springs, New York, of which I'm a voting member.

I'm required to submit up to four names of horses, jockeys, and trainers for initial consideration to the Nominating Committee by January 28. Last year's finalists who were not inducted -- jockeys Calvin Borel, Garrett Gomez, and Alex Solis, along with thoroughbreds Ashado, Housebuster, and Extra Heat -- will automatically be reconsidered for placement on the final ballot.

The names that we voters submit will also be scrutinized for possible ballot entries. I will submit Smarty Jones under the horse category, trainer Dale Baird, and jockeys Richard Migliore and David A. Gall. More on them later....
