Technology & PPs

Postby Stefan » Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:17 am

The thought was simple. I got sick of printing out pages and pages of PPs each weekend and hauling them to the OTB or track. I didn't want to bring my laptop and haul that monster around all day. So, I wanted to get a tablet/iPad that I could load the PPs on and put into my jacket or pants pocket.

The execution was difficult! (mainly because I'm a terrible cheapskate... )

What I should have done was to buy one of those awesome Google Nexus 7s for $199, download a PDF reader app and be done with it.

What I did do was to buy a Nook ($49 at Target at Christmas!) only to discover that you couldn't zoom in on PDF files using their standard reader which made the PPs totally unreadable because it shrank everything down too much to fit on the screen.

I then learned that you could hack a Nook so that it could run like a "real" Android tablet computer. Simple, right?

After days of trying, I finally hacked it...only to find out that 99.9999999% of PDF readers don't let you zoom on a Nook either!

The *one* reader that does work, for those who are stupi....errr...inspired enough to go down this route, is called "APV reader", which is, no doubt, made by some engineer in his basement in his spare time, but it's free.

So, I'm all set for a trial run this weekend! We'll see how it goes.

Now, if only I had a PDF reader with zoom that I could add my own notes to...

I switched completely to using my tablet to download and make notes on PPs.

I have a Toshiba Droid tablet, and I have a program that allows me to write notes and draw and highlight on any PDF. I can zoom and shrink as I please.

I won't go back to paper.

Do I have to send out some of Vince's quackos to get the name of this magical program? :D

qPDF. It was like $1.99 or something in the Google app store. I tried a few and settled on this one.

My Nexus tablet started acting goofy with .pdfs last month using Chrome browser - can't open up the past performance charts at Equibase anymore because it defaults to some sort of .xcm (?? cant remember what it is right now) instead of .pdf If I use Boat browser it gives the option to change the extension to .pdf before downloading and then it opens normally. I need to see if Brisnet pps were affected - Android and Adobe hate each other apparently...

Very interesting! Maybe my "simple" solution isn't so simple after all! This all seems like it should be straight-forward...PDFs on a tablet...but apparently not!

To be clear...I buy DRF formulator PPs on my computer and then email the PDF to myself to get it on my tablet. So when I open the PDF on the tablet, it's not within a browser.
