Today's P5 handle was up 36% over same day last year.

That is your version and perhaps you are right Andy...Talking to the leaders at TOC, they insisted they knew this bet was going to be a hit...

Who? Mike and Lou weren't there at the time. Go ask Liebau. He'll tell you the truth.

Excerpt:

Hollywood Park also will bring a new 50-cent pick five to the table when it opens today. At 14 percent, it has the lowest takeout of any wager in California and will include a carryover if no patrons select all five winners.

The low-takeout addition to the track's wagering menu was a concession to the horseplayers who stayed away from Santa Anita because of an increase in the takeout on exotic bets that went into effect this year.

"There were customers of ours that had suggested (the pick five) and we responded," Liebau said.

"We hope that it works. The thought is that it might entice people to come back to California. The out-of-state wagering was disappointing at Santa Anita and we're hoping to get some of those customers back."

Claimbox, your opinion was exactly the same as the TOC, the CHRB, and just about everyone else. Most of the board members back then weren't involved in the negotiations although they had to be briefed to finally approve it.

I believe you are way offbase if you think the Pick Five has any chance to outhandle the Pick Six...

You can go back and look at all the posts. Not too many people thought it would work and most people thought it was a stupid bet to put in the first race.

Well, I'm still not sold on the first race thing, but I'm glad it worked out for them.

It's all about getting people from the east to stick around and play the card. Handle on the first five races of the day has gone up since they put it.

That makes sense and it seemed to work, it's my personal preference to watch/bet small a race or two before I jump in.

That's sound logic.
