If Santa Anita is able to pay the bonus as prize money or as an advertising expense and write that off would what you have written above still be true? The reason I'm asking is that when this all started a few months back it was thought that the prize money couldn't be written off. What would be the difference if they just added the bonus on the signer at the window? Or is there no difference other than the winner could be subject to withholding under certain circumstances (like 6 paying $4200 and having the bonus put you into withholding)? Thanks!

There is no issue for Santa Anita. The money can be written off in a number of ways. I believe you are confusing a "prize" received versus "gambling winnings" for the recipient.

A pure prize would be something like going to a mall and filling out a slip for a drawing and winning a TV set. Clearly you have not gambled to win and consequently you cannot write-off gambling losses against the prize winnings. At Santa Anita you MUST gamble in order to win the bonus. So the winnings result from gambling.

Santa Anita, I believe, could put everything on one signer. It may be that they don't want to rewrite the software to take into account the different set of rules for different bettors. There may be the small benefit of no withholding in circumstances where neither the winnings nor the bonus exceed $5,000 but where the total of the two do. To be consistent with my position, I would have to believe that withholding should take place if the total exceeds $5,000.

Thanks Andy for posting the rules and regulations regarding the bonus. I had a question that was answered in the
thread. I use my TOBA card to get into the clubhouse and also have a Thoroughbreds card that I don't use much
anymore. So I can now scan my card at the live teller window or SAMS machine prior to making the Pick 6 wager
to qualify for the bonus.

It will be interesting to see the handle. Last year they ran on a Thursday and the pool was $137,329. There was a carryover going into Friday last year so we really can’t compare that day. Last Friday ( December 30th) there was no carryover and the pool was $138,432.

Good for the three who hit the wager.

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 6, 2013)—Santa Anita’s all-new 20 percent on-track Pick Six bonus rewarded three lucky fans attending The Great Race Place on Sunday, as they will bag a total of $8,776.20—20 percent more than the Pick Six mutuel payout of $7,313.20, which will go to nine other winning tickets purchased off-track.
